Award Programs

To further its mission, the S&R Foundation currently makes two awards – The S&R Washington Award and the S&R Ueno Award – and works in partnership with other nonprofit organizations to further the talents of young artists and scientists

The S&R Washington Award
(Postmark Deadline:  October 1 of each year)

This award goes to talented young artists in the fields of fine arts, music, drama, dance, photography, and film.  The award is especially intended to encourage individuals who contribute to U.S. – Japanese understanding.

Each winner will be awarded the cash prize of $5,000.  In addition, the Awards Committee may designate a Grand Prize winner who receives an additional $5,000 and will be eligible for a Foundation sponsored event showcasing the winner’s talents, such as a concert hall debut, gallery showing, or screening (depending on the artist’s medium and career goals).

Previous showcases supported by the Foundation have included debuts at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center, and recitals with the Washington Conservatory of Music, among others.

Terms and deadlines for the S&R Washington Award:

Applications for the S&R Washington Award must be postmarked by October 1 of each year.  A report should be sent to the Foundation at the end of the grant year describing how the award helped to advance the winner’s career.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Applicant may not be enrolled part-time, full-time, or finishing work in a degree-granting program.
  3. Applicant must have resided in the United States or Japan for one year in the past five years before applying for an Award.
  4. Applicant must not have received an advanced level of recognition in his or her artistic discipline in the United States or Japan.
  5. Applicant must have documented proof of having performed or exhibited during the past year.
Entry Details:

Entries must be submitted in writing, addressed to the S&R Washington Award Committee and postmarked by October 1 of each year.  All entries must include the following at the time of submission:

  1. A completed entry form.
  2. A sample photograph, record, or video tape of the artist’s work.  Musicians and vocalists must submit a compact disc recording marked with name and musical program attached.
  3. An essay (250 to 500 words) detailing how the applicant’s art advances the mission of the Foundation.
  4. The entrant’s biography and photograph.
  5. Three (3) letters of recommendation from recognized authorities or professionals in the applicant’s discipline. These must be on letterhead, institutional or personal, and signed.  Each must include the recommender’s contact information.  Only signed originals will be accepted. The recommendations must be mailed with the application package.

Incomplete entries will not be considered.

The S&R Washington Award Committee will not return entry materials nor assume responsibility for material submitted.

The S&R Ueno Award
(Deadline Under Revie
w)

This award goes to a young scientist primarily in the field of health care-related sciences such as medical, pharmaceutical and public health care research and is especially intended to encourage individuals who contribute to U.S. - Japanese understanding. The award will be given to the educational or charitable institution at which the research is or will be conducted.

Terms and deadlines for Ueno Award:

This award is under review, and applications are not being accepted at this time.
