S&R Foundation established the Ryuji Ueno Award for Ion Channels or Barrier Function Research (commonly known as the “Ueno Award”) in partnership with the American Physiological Society (APS) in 2002 . The Ueno Award is given annually to an individual demonstrating outstanding promise based on his/her research in ion channels or epithelial barrier function.

In 2013, S&R Foundation renewed its collaboration with APS to present the Ueno Award, with a variation in focus. Until 2020, the award will be presented to an early career investigator demonstrating outstanding promise based on his/her research in wound healing, tissue remodeling, and/or organ regeneration.
